Leveraging social media to stand out for jobs
It’s no secret employers and recruiters use social media channels to screen potential new employees. Whether you’re active on social media or not, it will likely play a role in your job search.
While your LinkedIn or Facebook profile may have been updated recently and appears professional, there are some additional factors that will really amp up your chances for success.

1) Consider your platform
The reason why you should take a considered approach to your social channels for work is so you can focus your time and effort on one or two platforms, rather than spreading yourself thin, in turn, not providing a complete work history or leaving crucial information out.
If your working experience is in a white collar profession, you may find a lot of your peers and industry will be active on LinkedIn. If that’s not the case, find out which social media platform will work best for you. Also dig a little deeper in your research to determine where recruiters and businesses are sourcing their candidates.
2) Get endorsed
On LinkedIn, there is an endorsement capability where your connections can leave comments on your profile and endorse you for certain skills such as:
- User experience
- Business strategy
Think of it as a “people rating” score, which adds validity to your experience and overall online resume since it’s essentially crowdsourced.
One key tip is to be highly selective in the skills you add – do not go overboard.
Recruiters and employers will be hiring for certain skills and if you’ve been endorsed for anything and everything, it may impact your chances of being considered for a new role.
Lastly, according to LinkedIn, people who list at least five skills receive up to 17 times more profile views.
3) Refresh your profile summary
We’ve all seen the standard profile summary sections on social media platforms – they’re all very same-same. So why not add some personality to it by posing a question or writing a line that can hook in potential employers and recruiters?
Most of the time, the profile summary will start to list and explain work experience.
What if you flipped this and rewrote it from the approach of: This is how I can help you.
One way to tackle a refreshed profile summary is to do a bit of digging on social media channels and find examples that resonate with you. For example, check out ex-NBA player Shaquille O’Neal’s LinkedIn profile – he describes himself as “a purveyor of fun”, which aligns well to his current roles as an NBA analyst, brand ambassador and creative partner. His summary is more personable and tells his story, while also including his interests. Many businesses will get a sense of his personality right away and want buy-in, making him an ideal candidate for a new role.
4) Build connections
In a professional setting, connecting with others on social media platforms whom you haven’t met in person is completely normal and expected. After all, people are trying to expand their connections and network all the time, and doing this online is so efficient.
Scope out companies you want to work for and managers or leaders whose team you could potentially join. If you are being highly proactive in your job hunt, you could request to have a coffee or brief phone call with them once they’ve accepted your connection request.
5) Share relevant content
Following the advice above is not guaranteed to land you a great new role alone. There are thousands of people on social media platforms searching for new jobs.
A solid way to stand out from the pack is to share relevant content as social media posts. There are plenty of articles, reports and video content being shared every day, which will grab the attention of your network in the form of likes, comments and sharing.
Even if your posts don’t receive any likes, it still goes a long way in demonstrating that you’re staying up to date with your industry or are at least making an attempt to engage with your peers. Also remember that generating likes and comments on social posts can be a slow burn. So stay consistent in your content sharing. You’ll eventually find your audience and you never know you’ll stand out to, as a potential employee.
