Tax and National Insurance
If you work in the UK, you will have to pay Income Tax and National Insurance on your wages, commonly through a system called PAYE (Pay As You Earn). Your employer uses this system to deduct Income Tax and National Insurance contributions from your wages before they pay you.
If you are working in the UK for the first time, you will need to complete a P46 form and apply for a National Insurance (NI) number. To apply for a National Insurance number, contact the DirectGov Jobcentre Plus on +44 (0) 845 600 0643 (8am to 6pm Monday to Friday). They will inform you of their nearest office where you will most likely be required to attend an “Evidence of identity” interview.
To find out more information on your tax and National Insurance, please refer to www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk.
